ANSWER
Recovery Point Objective = maximum acceptable data loss (how far back). Recovery Time Objective = maximum acceptable downtime (how long to recover).

  1. DR strategies (lowest→highest cost/readiness)

Backup & Restore, Pilot Light, Warm Standby, and Multi-Site Active/Active — faster recovery costs more.

  2. Backup & Restore

Cheapest DR: back up data and restore into a new environment on disaster. Highest RTO/RPO of the four strategies.

  3. Pilot light

Core services (e.g. a replicated database) run minimally in the recovery Region; the rest is provisioned on failover. Lower RTO than backup & restore.

  4. Warm standby

A scaled-down but always-running copy of the full stack in the recovery Region, scaled up on failover. Lower RTO than pilot light.

  5. Multi-site active/active

The workload runs in multiple Regions simultaneously serving traffic; near-zero RTO/RPO at the highest cost and complexity.

  6. AWS Backup

A centralised, policy-based service to automate and manage backups across AWS services (and on-premises via Storage Gateway).

  7. Failover and Regions

Designing across Regions (with Route 53 failover, cross-Region replicas/backups) protects against Region-wide events.
